Ramsbottom Horticultural Society

HISTORY

Near the end of 1915, George Henry Cheshire was the prime mover in getting together the people who had allotment ground in the East Ward of Ramsbottom. A meeting was held in Jan 1916, from this meeting rules & regulations were drawn up for the proposed society. Mr J H Wood became chairman and Mr W Fenwick as president, a position he held for 34 years! The title of the society was to be East Ward Allotment Holders & Horticultural Society. there aims were-

  •  To grow as much foodstuff as possible

  •  To promote interest in horticulture

  •  To promote friendly rivalry by competition, and

  •  The financial year to end in Oct 1916 and an AGM to be held

The society was in action! (extract from 'Through The Years 1916-1973, by the late Wilf Taylor)

TODAY

The society is run very much the same way, the name has changed people have come and gone but that's about it really which is a blessing in many ways.

The society has 3 shows a year, the exhibits include flowers, plants, vegetables, handicrafts, eggs, confectionary, wines, junior and novice sections. Running, helping out or just taking part is always enjoyable and very rewarding.

The society also runs a Trading Hut Scheme on Peel Brow Allotment Ground for members of RHS it stocks fertilisers, compost, sand, potatoes, onions and many, many more general gardening products, it is well worth a visit.
